The Picnic, Burwood

Located in the heart of Sydney’s Inner Western suburb of Burwood, The Picnic opened its doors in February 2016. This young cafe became a fun and vibrant landmark from the word go! Its picturesque setting within Burwood Park and its lively atmosphere make it the perfect oasis amongst a bustling city centre.

The Picnic serves breakfast, brunch, lunch and coffee and drinks. There is a kids menu too. They don’t take bookings but there’s plenty of tables.

We paid a well overdue visit to The Picnic Burwood last week, we’ve been hearing so much about it and just haven’t been able to get there but we’ve ticked it off the list now! We took our two favourite mini-diners and road tested the kid-friendliness of the place – thoroughly!

First off, they don’t take bookings it’s first in first served and we didn’t have to wait but it was lunchtime on a weekday – we hear weekend breakfast queues can be significant!

This place is an oasis! It was a pretty warm day and you walk in and feel COOL! Surrounded by the Park itself, plenty of greenery and this awesome mist spray down the sides of the awning is brilliant! The best thing of all is that the kids can play – unhindered – in the park just steps away from you! The little ones had a great time, none of this boring “sit on your bottom” and wait for the food to arrive! It’s a cafe with the biggest play area ever!

The menu is extensive and includes Breakfast served until midday, Lunch from midday with dedicated Kids menu which while small will satisfy most little people. There’s also an All Day menu that has selections from both Breakfast and Lunch. The choices run from burgers, wings, schnitzel, salads and some Middle Eastern inspired faves like Fattoush and some interesting lamb options.

We chose The Schnitz ($17.90) and the 12 Out of 10 (19.90) both were lovely, fresh, tasty and served in good time even though this place is busy! The kids chose Spring Chicken – grilled chicken tenderloins served with fries and Luigi – penne pasta with napoli sauce, both $9.90. They were popular and they shared them which meant both ended up with big red pasta sauce smiles!

The drinks menu is extensive also, cold pressed juices, smoothies and classic shakes in kids sizes yay! Of course coffee and tea are on the menu too! They have some interesting “Cool Down’ drinks in combinations such as Watermelon, Lychee & Strawberry which sound really refreshing!

At the other end of the cfae on the outside (facing Westfield) are the automatic bathrooms – and one has a change table. I can’t decide whether I love them or hate them but I do wonder why they’re always wet … which is a little freaky but better than the alternative I guess!

After lunch we wandered through Burwood Park, a great way to walk of those calories or just relax and let the kids play in the playground! We loved it, The Picnic really is an oasis in the centre of Burwood, we’ll be back to give breakfast a whirl next time!
